This happens because the size of the video is determined by the YouTube player. Click on the gear icon on the player window and change the Quality setting to 1080p. This will give you the largest video size available. Ensure that your computer monitors resolution is set to 1920x1080 as well, then the video can be played in full screen mode without the extra black space.
